Jerries Lose to Coaldale (1958)

St. Cyril's, of Coaldale, Tops Locals Here for 4-0 Mark; Girls Open Season

SS Cyril and Methodius', Coaldale, won its fourth in a row in Panther Valley Parochial League action here last night with a 57-32 victory over St. Jerome's, second loss against three wins for the charges of Coaches Jimmy Johnson and George Marukonis.

It was the last scheduled game for the league teams until a meeting is held in the near future to set up a schedule for the remainder of the season.

In other results of the league, St. Ann's Lansford lost at St. Joseph's Jim Thorpe, 72-69, and St. Joseph's Summit Hill dropped a close 44-39 decision at SS Peter and Paul's, Lansford. The St. Michael's, Lansford, at Immaculate Conception, Jim Thorpe, game was postponed. In a preliminary game here last night, the St. Jerome's parochial school team lost a 19-10 decision to the SS Cyril and Methodius' team from Coaldale.

The SS Cyril and Methodius' team which shares the league lead with St. John's, of Jim Thorpe, each with 4-0 records, started off here last night against the Jerries with a 12-5 first quarter edge, and were never headed throughout the game.

Led by high scorers Ed Kassak, who had 19 points; Holubek, who netted 11 markers, and R. Domin, who scored 10 points, the charges of Coach Billy Pisko used their height to advantage against the smaller Jerries' squad.

Jimmy Menconi, veteran of last year's squad, kept pace with the visitors with 12 points in a losing cause.

Girls Lose

The St. Jerome's sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls team, coached by Jack Barron and Bob Byatt, met the Coaldale girls in the preliminary game and lost, 19-10. George Kacik is coaching the winner's team.

Kathy Radocha paced the visitors with 13 of her team’s 19 markers, while Milhiser, McGlinchey, O’Malley and Haughney scored for the losers.

Other Games

St. Ann's, Lansford, visited St. Joseph's, Jim Thorpe, last night and lost to the home team, 76-29. The winners were led by George Armbruster, who had 27 markers, and Joe Hydro hit the nets for 20 markers. Digilio posted nine points for the losers.

Joe Perilli, the league’s leading scorer, pumped in 26 of 44 points for St. Joseph’s, of Summit Hill, at SS Peter and Paul’s, Lansford, as his team won, 44-39, with Milkulski posting 17 in a losing cause for the home team.
