SERVED IN FAR PACIFIC
Sergeant Walter J. Valuch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Zlock, 274 3rd St., Coaldale, is home with an honorable discharge. Inducted Nov. 9, 1942, he is home the first time in three years.
The sergeant spent 32 months at Bougainville, Guadalcanal, Leyte, Cebu, Luzon, Solomon Islands and Yokohama. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Good Conduct medal, Infantry Combat Badge, and Asiatic-Pacific medal.

AT END OF RUSH JOURNEY FROM EUROPE SOLDIER LEARNS OF DEATH OF PARENTS
Ordered flown fron Gnumden, Austria, Nov. 27, by President Truman, Corporal John J. O’Donnell did not reach the United States until early yesterday when his plane was set down at Bolling Field. Then , in a telephone talk with his cousin, Marjorie Gildea, of Washington, he learned that while he was enroute to his Coaldale home his mother had died, as the result of a cerebral hemorrhage, 12 days after the death of his father.

Inducted in March, 1943, O’Donnell trained at Ft. Knox and Camp Meade. He had beem witha team which is investigating war crimes at Gnumden, Austria. He hold three battle stars and a French citation for 14 months service in Europe.

ON LEAVE
Lieutenant (jg) Richard J. Hoben, son of William J. Hoben, 246 5th St., Coaldale, yesterday negan his terminal leave after four years of Navy Service.

A former employee of Lansford branch office, Call-Chronicle newspapers, Hoben emlisted in the Navy in December, 1941. He served 11 months as a yeoman third class at Lakehurst, N.J., and 10 months as an aviation cadet before he was commissioned and made naval aviator in August, 1943.

After flying two years with Navy air ferry squadron three, Terminal Island, Calif., he was completing a refresher course at Pensacola, Fla., under orders to duty in the South Pacific, when the war ended.

The officer was mustered out at Philadelphia Navy yard last Friday and is to be plaved on inactive duty at the end of his terminal leave, Jan 11.

FISHER-DURISH ELKTON NUPTIALS ANNOUNCED
Marriage of Inez Fisher, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lemuel Fisher, 44 E. High St., Coaldale, and Joseph Durish, recently discharged veteran and son of John Durish, 46 E. Ridge St., Coaldale, Nov. 25 at Elkton, Md., was announced yesterday. Rev. Joseph Tomko performed the ceremony. The bride’s sister, Grace Fisher, Washington, D.C., was an attendant.

Mrs. Durish was graduated from St. Mary’s High school, class of 1945, and is a member of St. Mary’s church, Coaldale. She has been employed as a secretary by the government at Washington. Durish served three years overseas with the Army. A graduate of Coaldle High school, class of 1942, he attended Villanova college for a year. He is a member of SS. Cyril and Methodius church, Coaldale.

The couple left on a wedding trip to Tennessee and will reside in New York City.

COALDALE BASKET TEAM TO PLAY McADOO TONIGHT
Coaldale High school Tigers will open their 1945-46 basketball schedule tonight when they play host to Sammy Boyle’s McAdoo team, last year’s Class B champion of the PIAA title race. McAdoo was defeated in its opener last Friday by West Mahanoy township, 36-23.

Coaldale starting lineup is: Len Yelito and Vince Santolini, forwards; Joe Zenko, center; Edward Flyzik and Russell Verhousky, guards. Other varsity squad members are Eddie Yelito, Charles Berry, George Kacik and Mike Warcholak.

The Tigers will play another exhibition game with Jim O’Hara’s Mahanot township team on the home floor Wednesday night.

ST. MARY'S PUPILS PRESENT THREE SKETCHES
Three short sketches by St. Mary’s High school dramatic club members, Coaldale, were presented last nigh before members of St. Mary’s Holy Name society in the school auditorium. President Joseph Yorke, Sr., presided.

“One Word Alone” had as its cast: Michael Melley, Jr., and Theresa Schilling. Dolores Gaydos presented monologues while “Who Gets the Car Tonight?” was presented by Alice Boyle, Cecilia McGeehan, James Vorsteg, Norman Foran and Michael Melley. Florence Negri was announcer.

Committe appointed to arrange for a communion breakfast Sunda, Feb. 19, inlcuded James M. Donahue, John Rodgers and James Bonner. Members of the society will attend 8a.m. mass that Sunday and receive Holy Communion in a body of honor of six deceased World War II members of the parish. The church sent 178 members into service.

Entertainment for the meeting Jan. 13 will be in charge of Harry Roben, Joseph Yorke, Jr., and Michael Melley.
