COALDALE HIGH SCHOOL

COMPLEX COMMISSION

COALDALE HIGH SCHOOL

COMPLEX COMMISSION

In January of 1974, the Panther Valley School Board offered the vacated

Coaldale High School building to the borough of Coaldale to use it for

community or recreational purposes.

The Coaldale borough council held a public meeting in the High School

building in February of that year to hear what the people had to say as

whether to accept the building. A committee was formed, with Mayor

Ronald Plocinik as chairman, to see if it would be advisable to acquire the

building.

After considering the costs of renovating and maintaining the building,

and after considering the needs of the people, the committee recommended

that council accept the building and adjoning field areas from the School

Board. The committee informed council that they would assume all the

responsibilites to renovate and maintain the building. Council accepted

the building.

In June of 1974, the committee requested that council make them into a

commission so they could function as a legitimate body. Council did so,

thus forming the COALDALE HIGH SCHOOL COMPLEX COMMISSION.

MAYOR RONALD PLOCINIK was elected as the commission's president;

The commission voted to keep the COALDALE HIGH SCHOOL COLORS OF

ORANGE AND BLACK, and adopted a theme of '" SAVE THE TIGER "

The commission began to clean out the building and field area, repair windows,

and give the outside of the building a general face lifting. The building was in

desperate need of a new roof, so before any work would be done inside, enough

money would have to be raised to put the new roof on.

Many fund raising projects were initiated, such as paper drives, car washes,

dances, social games, and LABOR DAY outing, just to name a few.

Letters were sent to officials of the COUNTY, STATE, and FEDERAL

GOVERNMENT to see if there would be any help available.

( NONE WAS AVAILABLE . )

Realizing they would have to do it on their own, they began to work more

vigorously to get the roof on to make the building and grounds into a recre-

ational, cultural, and sports complex.

The commission also proposed that several rooms be made into a public

library, and other rooms into a COAL MUSEUM. The auditorium would also

be available for concerts, acting groups, and movies.

For the past year and a half, the commission and many helpers, young

and old, have pitched in to support the project. The building is being used

for some projects and the roof is going to be put on.

In the past one and a half years, they have elected new commission

members. The commission now cnsists of ;
