Vincent J. Sweeney


Vincent J. "Pap" Sweeney, age 77, of Coaldale, affectionately known as the Mayor of Seek, died Friday, March 30, 2012, at St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital in Coaldale, surrounded by his family. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy M. (Dally) Sweeney in 2008.

Vincent, retired in 1995 from Miners Memorial Hospital, the former Coaldale State Hospital where he worked in the boiler room.

He was the son of the late Lucy Sweeney-Oakes, and was raised by his grandparents, Catherine and John Sweeney.

He is survived by his, four daughters, Charlotte K (Sweeney) Murphy, wife of Harry; Georgine (Sweeney) Jungbaer, wife of Peter; Christine (Sweeney) Heffelfinger, wife of Ken; and Joan Marie (Sweeney) Hodon, wife of Joseph, all of Coaldale; two sons, Vincent J. Sweeney and his wife, Bernice; Robert W. Sweeney and his wife, Chrissy, both of Nesquehoning; two sisters, Mrs. Marie Quick, wife of David of Quakake; and Mrs. Kathryn Boris, wife of Leonard of Shenandoah; nine brothers, Charles J. and his wife, Jean of Altoona; Kenneth J of Scotch Plains, NJ; Arthur J. and his wife, Dee of Tamaqua; Jeffery of Tamaqua; Wayne A. and his wife, Jackie of Tuscarora; Emory G. of Tamaqua; Michael A. Oakes of Tamaqua; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grand-children. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Gertrude, Bernadette and Eleanore; brothers, Donald J. Oakes, Glyn M. Oakes; and a great-grandchild, Joshua Fallon.

Services: Arrangements are being handled by E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home, Inc., 655 East Broad Street Tamaqua, Pa., where the family will receive friends on Monday, April 2, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. and Tuesday, April 3, 2012 from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m.

Mass of Christian burial will be on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at 10 a.m. at Ss. Peter and Paul R.C.C. 307 Pine St., Tamaqua, Pa., with the Rev. William Linkchorst to officiate.

Interment at Sky View Memorial Park, Tamaqua, PA. Memorials in his honor to Arcadia Hospice 7248 Tilghman Street Suite No. 160 Allentown, Pa. 18106.
