John Zenzel, 89, formerly of Coaldale, died Wednesday in Nesquehoning.

He was the husband of the late Rose Ann (Vavra) Zenzel, who died in 2013.

Prior to retiring, he had worked as a mechanic at the former Kiddie Clothes Factory in Lansford.

Born in Coaldale, he was a son of the late Michael and Justina (Kashlak) Zenzel.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of St. Mary's Russian Orthodox Church, Coaldale.

A 1944 graduate of the former Coaldale High School, he was a member of the Coaldale American Legion and the Russian Citizens Club of Coaldale.

Surviving are his daughters, Lynn, wife of Bernard Sharpe of Lake Hauto, and Michele, wife of Paul Bunnevich of Mahoning Township; a brother, Andrew Zenzel and his wife, Connie, in California; grandchildren, Erica (Matthew) Ehrig, Nicole (Jeramy) Albert, Erin (Michael) Sabol and Ryan Sharpe; great grandchildren, Abigail Ehrig, Jake Albert and Bryce Sabol; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Stephen, Michael and Basil Zenzel; and five sisters, Mary King, Eva Novak, Anna Hadermayer, Helen Orth and Olga Hess.

Service: 11:45 a.m., Saturday, St. Mary's Russian Orthodox Church, Coaldale, with the Rev. Ignatius Gauvain officiating.

Interment, parish cemetery, Summit Hill. Call 11 to 11:45 a.m., Saturday, at the church.

Memorials in his name may be made to the church.
